The patent (EP1211926) includes seeds, plants and fruits of tomatos, which were produced in a traditional process by crossing commercially available tomato varieties with plants coming from the tomato's region of origin. The tomatos have a reduced water content and are therefore especially suitable for certain products like e.g. tomato ketchup. Holder of the patent is the Israeli Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. The Unilever company filed an opposition against the patent by reason of its own commercial interests. The opposition is one of the precedent cases at the European Patent Office (G1/08 and G2/12). The patent has been revoked in 2018.
